Dog Crate Size: What Size Dog Crate is Best? | Chewy

Bringing home a new canine companion? Before you go about figuring out how to crate train puppies, it’s important to learn what size dog crate is right for your furry family members. So what size dog crate does your dog need? And exactly how big should a dog crate be? Rather than scouring around trying to find the right dog crate size chart, use this simple method from Chewy.com and find the perfect dog crate size for your canine in seconds. First, measure your pup’s body while they stand. Take their length and add 4 inches to find the length their crate should be. Next, have them sit and measure the distance from their head to the floor. Add 4 inches to this and you’ve found the height of your dog’s crate. Width isn’t as precise, so just make sure they have enough room to turn around in. If your pup is still young, it might be a good idea to get a dog crate divider in order to increase the space they have access to in their crate as they grow. Once you’ve figured out the best dog crate size, you can move on to learning how to crate train your dog. Crate training your puppy can take some time, but at least it’ll be a comfy process in your canine’s cozy new dog cave. If you have a currently crate training adult dog, making sure their crate is comfortable is going to be a crucial part of the process, too.

So take the guessing game out of figuring out “What size dog crate do I need”! Getting a malamute pup soon. I’ve read that a 48′ crate is the required size. Anyone have any thoughts/experience with mals and crates?

I have a 5 month old Aussie that I started crating a few days after I got her. She’s 5 months now. She loves her crate and gives me no issues going in. She’ll even go in on her own just get a toy or sniff, or if I have a treat she likes she’ll head for her crate thinking that’s what I want. Lol. If I say "Go to your crate" she goes right to it and sits.

My issue is this: My mom. She doesn’t like keeping her in the crate all night, and when she gets up she obviously let’s her outside to potty. The issue is my mom doesn’t watch my dog in the yard! Bailey doesn’t like being alone in the yard. She will dig, tear up anything or chew on anything she can get ahold of. She’s been to the vet because of this already. (Worms) When I let her out I always sit and watch her play or potty, or I’ll play with her.

I have repeatedly told my mother not to let my dog outside if she’s not gonna supervisor her 100% of the time. (Would you let a two year old child in the yard alone? No) Bailey has been digging near our back fence in an attempt to get out the yard. I am currently waiting for the ground to dry so I can fix the area I spent all day cleaning up qnd making nice, then I will place a fence there so she can’t dig in that spot. But since my mother won’t listen, Bailey will just find another spot.

It’s funny because my mom complains about the dog digging but it’s her fault. Bailey doesn’t dig on my watch! If my dog gets out, stolen, or hurt I will hold my mother solely accountable.

Bailey is capable of staying in her crate all night. She doesn’t whine or bark unless she really needs to go, and that’s rarly, she doesn’t have any accidents either so I don’t see the problem. Why can’t my mom get this?! My sister leaves Bailey’s bother in the crate for that long too but she doesn’t have my mom to get in the way.🤦‍♀️ BTW, her crate is big for her. I even recently removed the divider in it because my mom complained. My mom doesn’t even want Bailey so why does she care how I train her or care for her?!

Why do you have to "divide" the crate?? Why can’t you let them have ALL the space? I’m thinking some people don’t have the sense God gave a billy goat! I can see crating them for a couple of hours while you do chores but more than that is just not right! Don’t give a crap if "other people do it"!

I have a question I have a pomeranian, chihauhau mix i have measured and decided a 24" is perfect for I am potty training him, but I have school and no ones at home they are either in school or at work. I plan on feeding him and taking him for a walk in the mornings before school. but I’m not sure that’s enough for he will have to be in this small cage for 8+ hours. I’m not sure If i can train him correctly this way. Please advise.

What size you recomend for a Golden Retreiver ?

  24. @jasminechen009 on October 30, 2024 at 3:49 pm

Our dog was only 14 lbs when we adopted him (because he was a stray) but he grew to be 20 lbs (normal for his breed) and now his crate is too small for him

  25. @kateadams5505 on October 30, 2024 at 3:52 pm

We got my puppy a bigger crate, but it’s so giant! He’s too big for his other one now so we’ll keep him in the new one until we get a medium one.
