Change in Diet Eliminated Cat's Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Change in Diet Eliminated Cat's Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The best treatment for my feline’s Irritable Bowel Syndrome was to change his diet. I thought that I was feeding him a healthy diet. My previous cat ate dry food during her entire 18 year life. She was healthy her whole life.

I just wanted to thank you for your videos. They have helped me to greatly improve the lives of my cats. My cats were unable to digest any dry foods we tried. All of them (I have 11 rescues) would always regurgitate and vomit their dry food so I did some research and I realized how unhealthy dry food is. I started looking at wet food diets. I found Dr. Pierson’s website and your videos, which have been incredibly informative. My cats prefer canned food to raw food. I was wondering if you have used any canned foods containing carrageenan, and, if so, if you noticed any negative issues with that ingredient causing stomach upset or any other health issues? I have never used any canned foods with this ingredient as most of my cats have sensitive systems and I have heard many mixed things about carrageenan. I have seen so many positive changes since implementing their wet food diet: the cats are a healthier weight, they seem full after eating now compared to when they were eating dry food and were always hungry, their dandruff is gone, their hairballs have disappeared, they aren’t guzzling water like they are constantly dehydrated as they did while on dry food, and there is no more regurgitation or vomiting anymore which is wonderful for them….and for me! I am so happy to hear Melvin is 15 and doing well. That is wonderful news! I wish you both many more years together. Thank you again for your informative videos and please give Melvin a pet for me!

I have tried so many times to get my elderly lady to eat wet food but hates the texture and will only eat dry.
She had Pancreatitis in summer and she vomits a lot and has to take an appetite boosting pill every 3 days.
I really want her on wet food.
Taking her for a check up tomorrow and ask if she can have a special gastro diet. 👍

My cat has IBD although he has been eating canned food all the time. He doesn’t like dry food and does’t like raw food.

I need a recipe for my 14/15 year old male who had Inflammatory bowel disease. We think he is allergic to chicken so nothing with chicken.

  6. @jbuggy3845 on October 30, 2024 at 3:05 pm

My cat’s BID Improved almost 100,% just by switching his protein from chicken, to Turkey. I feed Instinct limited ingredient Turkey ONLY. Just water (bottled spring) to drink. I never truly believed cats could become allergic to their proteins…..I am a true believer now. Dr. BECKER switches out her cats protein every month or so…..good idea!

When I switched to wet food it caused my cats to get hyperthyroid disease because of the liners in the cans. Commercial cat food is just garbage.

When your pet has constipation, CKD or IBD-can lead to cancer, it’s because of dry food. Heavily processed and lacks moisture which they’ll never be able to make up for. Raw diet is preferred, but canned/wet food will do as well (make sure it has NO meat BY product NOR food coloring and mentions the meat sources-high meat protein for cats) You can buy ***raw meals, like Stella and Chewy, Primal, Honest Kitchen, Darwin or Steve’s real food among others*** . If your cat/dog has diabetes you can look into Mature Health – Young Again.  So many Vets are ignorant or money hungry, and tell people to put their pet on this expensive DRY food which LACK meat. The better brands CAN NOT be found at the major pet stores (yet) but in your smaller local pet boutiques. I will never forget going into Petco and always turning every food product around to see if any of these companies upgraded their food yet to show more meat ingredients, and EVERYTIME I was disappointed, having to buy something I was not happy with (I didn’t know any of the better brand food product back then or I would of used the internet). My cat has CKD  from dry food. She’s a kibble junkie, to get her to eat canned food I used a COFFEE GRINDER and added the dry food powder to her wet food until she got used to it. Finally, a pet boutique opened up in a town nearby, I can buy Weruva and Poke bowl pouches which I can add to her canned food to help make her eat it.  When it comes to your pet’s health, do your own research 1st. Dr Becker (dr Mercola healthy pets) and Dr Lisa Pierson are great resources *PS- when switching your pet food do it gradually by adding some of the new food to their regular and increase over time. Switching too quickly can make them feel sick (lacking digestive enzymes in their GI track* General brands to avoid; Beniful, Meow Mix, Friskies, 9Lives, Purina, Iams, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Whiskas. I’m sure I am missing some. Most of these brands Lack actual meat, use food coloring, contain harmful/toxic ingredients or/and fail at doing recalls

Okay, I will tell you guys my cats story. I had 3 cats at the age of 21 years old together!! Everyone would ask me what I FED Them!! My 1 cat had severe allergies, and she could ONLY eat 1 protein, and that was pork, and she was the last 1 to pass. I cooked ground pork, can of peas (no salt) with a lil brown rice. I mixed in her batch with componded Choline and Taurine from pharmacist through my vet. When I browned the ground pork I had to make sure I really got all that grease out of it by draining thru the colander and paper towels. 1 big batch lasted for 3 days. Sometime I would make a couple of batches and freeze. Now the other 2, I gave them wet food premium only. Hope this helps.

Dry food is designed to keep you taking your loved cat to the vet who is owned by the same companies that make dry cat food. Follow Jesscaticles on You Tube and know the truth.

  28. @r.1599 on October 30, 2024 at 3:31 pm

The vets in my country are educated by a university where the educational materials are sponsored by Big Cat Food (Hills, Purina, etc). And too many of these vets will tell you that corn is a good thing to have in your cat’s food. My little guy was dying; chronic diarrhea, seizures, wasting muscles. Vet said "Use this Science diet–corn is good for cats!" It had no effect. Vet said "Your little boy’s going to die, there’s nothing I can do". I said I was going to try a raw diet I got from an online vet. "But that’ll kill him!" exclaimed the vet. If he was dying, what did I have to lose? So I made up the recipe, and 2 days later, no diarrhea. In a week, no seizures. He grew strong and healthy. I got a new vet who examined my recipe and said it duplicated what cats eat in the wild. A raw diet doesn’t work for all cats, but it works for many, and I have now saved two sick rescue cats I adopted, by feeding them raw.

  31. @OB.x on October 30, 2024 at 3:32 pm

i’d be careful with dry food. i switched to a high end food, and it still gave my cat kidney failure, it was too late. wet food is the best. but the "special food" they offer isn’t the best, it’s really important that wet food with the correct diseases, but the stuff they sell you at the vet is a scam.

for swtiching from dry food, crush your cat’s OLD dry gibble into a dust, and mix into the wet canned food. ALSO buy churu treats. mix it in there, that’s crack for kitties. it’s already a wet treat.

  32. @AnimeDreamingEcchi on October 30, 2024 at 3:34 pm

Your entire story sounds exactly the same way mine does

  33. @watchgirl772 on October 30, 2024 at 3:35 pm

Dr Lisa Pierson has an excellent website!!!! My 5 yr old cat was dx with feline diabetes. He was on a dry food diet, along with my 13 year old cat. I switched to canned cat food, fancy feast. He still requires insulin and at home blood sugar testing. We could have avoided all of this if only I knew the devastating effects of dry cat food.

  34. @undefined69695 on October 30, 2024 at 3:35 pm

Would like to see a follow up video. Often changing food can help at least temporarily. I have tried all the different foods and nothing helps but at least dry food gets her the calories she needs.

  35. @lebooshdiaries on October 30, 2024 at 3:35 pm

Hi Diane, I came upon your video. My cat is suspected to have IBD and my vet says just go on hypoallergenic kibbles + probiotics. No wet canned food, no homemade chicken food, nothing. My cat hates the new kibbles, hates the probiotic. And now I see your videos and you made homemade cat food for Melvin. So homemade cat food and not necessarily hypoallergenic kibbles can still work, in your case. Did Melvin have to go on steroids initially to manage his IBD? Thank you and I hope he’s still going strong!

  36. @JacquelineMcIntoshNo1 on October 30, 2024 at 3:36 pm

You have really good points in this video. I changed my own diet to health Keto & IF and it changed my life. So it only made sense to look at what my cats should be eating. And sure enough, they kibble is not good for them at all. I’ve always given them some canned food in the morning, but left out kibble for them all day. Now they are on canned food and no longer have the kibble to graze on. Their coats are so much softer. Thank you for sharing the link to catinfo.org. Dr. Pierson seems very informed. My rescued city cat still has problems with IBS after hundreds of $$ to my vet for meds. I believe the right diet will help heal it on it’s own.

  37. @deniset3164 on October 30, 2024 at 3:36 pm

My cat ate wet food all her life so its wrong now I’m told pumpkin will help.

  38. @TheChefmike66 on October 30, 2024 at 3:38 pm

I also really have a debt of gratitude to Dr. Pierson for her website and recipe. I’ve been making my two cats’ food for five months now, and so far so good, they look great. It’s only 2 hours every 3-4 weeks. I have a medium-small refrigerator/freezer, although I aspire to get a small chest freezer for the cats’ food. Because right now my tater tots have to go in the fridge.

They weren’t sick, but I’ve lost many cats, maybe even the majority of them, to urinary tract blockages and other related issues. I’m in my late 50’s and have had cats for my entire life. I now believe that the dry food killed them all early. Sorry, it’s a hard pill to swallow. It was for me anyway.

The 2 yr old male that I have now, who was becoming obese from dry food free-fed, is now showing his hips. He is much more playful than he has been for months, while he was inflating like a balloon. I now know better and am feeding wet food, three times a day. His coat, as well as the younger female’s coat, is really soft and thick. I actually enjoy making their food, although I’m a professional chef so there’s that…

I began by bringing home salmon trim and chicken trim from work, and I realized that it was free and the (single at the time) cat loved it. Then after several months I gained a rescue kitten, and then I began worrying about a nutrient imbalance from the (cooked) muscle only chicken and salmon, both were eating mainly kibble but also a fair amount of cooked muscle protein. Then I found Dr. Lisa Pierson’s website. Now I understand why the way I was doing it was not right.

I can’t really afford canned food, but chicken thighs are $1.99/lb or less, so even though there are supplements in the recipe, it works out much cheaper and also much better when you make it. That’s how I feel about food in general. Guys I work about 50 hours a week, so I get not having time. Maybe just try it, especially if you already have access to a decent grinder. Just try it. My cats love to hang out while I’m making their food. Suddenly, I’m really interesting and cool to them. fwiw

My elderly cat had diarrhea for a year now…and sadly i live in a country were vets aren’t experienced so i dont trust them …and the food choices we have are limited because of the war (i live in Yemen) so i am trying my best to figure out what suits my cat …so i need to know what flavors do you feed him and how many times a day and did you try to add to his food fish oil

My vet recommended Dr. Pierson’s site years ago & I have been spreading the word of “NO DRY FOOD!” ever since (even to complete strangers in the cat food aisle). I just recently started cooking (mainly because of cat food shortages) but they absolutely LOVE it! And I do believe they eat less (more nutritional).

It’s September 2023. Melvin is closing in on 14 years old and still thriving. During the last year, the quality of the commercial canned food I was feeding Melvin (Nine Lives or Friskies), has become quite expensive and the quality of the ingredients has diminished. I looked into buying a better grade food or maybe having fresh food shipped to my home. The best canned food was close to $10 a lb and I would have to trust that it was really top notch food. I went back to Dr. Pierson’s web page to reconsider making my own cat food and decided to take the plunge. I doubled her recipe and get about 10 1.5 cup containers of food. Including clean up (time consuming – I don’t want to cross contaminate anything in my kitchen) it’s taking a little under 2 hours to make a batch of food. Depending on the price of the chicken thighs (sale or no sale price), it costs around $3.00 a lb. The Carlson’s fish oil costs about as much as the chicken. I did make a video showing how to make it. Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/aqOCv3feOMw?si=fwfjt_I83DUJESp1
